Description

A Finnish civil servant finds his ordinary world shattered as the First World War ignites a clash between state authority and dissenting citizens. When a powerful regional official—both charismatic and ruthless—summons him for a seemingly routine interview, the meeting erupts into a bewildering mixture of accusation, pleading and unexpected tears. The protagonist’s brief reprieve, secured by a dubious promise of paperwork, quickly evaporates as police storm his home, ushering him toward a looming prison.

The memoir then traces his forced departure from Hämeenlinna, the bewildering journey across Russia’s borders, and the first stark encounters with exile life in the remote towns of Petrograd, Tomsk and Narym. Through vivid recollections and candid observations, he paints a picture of bureaucratic cruelty, the precariousness of survival, and the strange camaraderie that emerges among those cast aside by the state. Listeners are invited into a personal chronicle that balances bitter irony with quiet resilience, offering a window onto an often‑overlooked chapter of early‑twentieth‑century history.
