Description

In a modest, sun‑lit room of a women’s shelter on the eve of a looming war, a handful of caretakers and young assistants go about their daily chores. The stark furnishings and solemn religious icons create a quiet backdrop for the murmured conversations of Anna, Dora, and Karolianga, whose whispered hopes and resentments clash with the rigid expectations set by the institution’s overseer. Through their banter, the play subtly exposes the power dynamics and simmering discontent that lie beneath the surface of routine labor.

The dialogue teeters between weary compliance and furtive rebellion, hinting at the characters’ yearning for a different life beyond the walls that confine them. A fleeting encounter with an enigmatic stranger at the window stirs both curiosity and fear, suggesting that even in this closed setting, the outside world’s turbulence may soon intrude.

Heikki Välisalmi’s early‑twentieth‑century drama blends domestic realism with a growing sense of unease, inviting listeners to listen closely to the fragile hopes and quiet defiance that ripple through the shelter’s corridors.
