ACT II.
In the bustling waterways of 16th‑century Venice, the melancholy merchant Antonio finds his fortunes reversed when his close friend Bassanio asks for a loan to pursue the wealthy heiress Portia. To secure the money, Antonio turns to the sharp‑tongued moneylender Shylock, whose bond—marked by a pound of flesh—sets the stage for a clash of mercy and justice. The opening act introduces a colorful cast of dukes, princes, and servants, all moving through the glittering Rialto and the elegant halls of Belmont.
This adaptation, first staged in 1858 at the Princess’s Theatre, mixes Shakespeare’s original verse with detailed historical notes that illuminate the city’s splendor and its legal customs. Period‑accurate costumes, painted scenery of St. Mark’s Square, and incidental music performed by a small chorus heighten the drama without overwhelming the text. Listeners will hear the tension rise as Antonio’s despair, Bassanio’s hope, and Shylock’s insistence intertwine, promising a compelling exploration of love, loyalty, and the price of a promise.

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
