A quiet fishing village clings to a steep hillside south of the harbor, its backs to a dark forest and the towering white‑capped tower that crowns the highest ridge. The sea presses close to Aapeli’s modest home, where he and his wife have created a small, painstakingly cultivated potato patch on the sand‑kissed soil. A former sailor, Aapeli now spends his days tending the field and recalling the voyages that once carried his cargo between Finland and Estonia.
When a fierce easterly storm rolls in, the shoreline erupts with a restless chorus of crows that have learned to fish like seabirds. Their swift, daring dives compete with the sleek gulls, turning the surf into a frantic arena of beaks and wings. Amid the crashing waves and raucous calls, the villagers watch the clever birds battle for their fleeting prizes, a vivid reminder of nature’s relentless ingenuity.

Best known for vivid stories set around Suursaari, this Finnish writer brought island life, local folklore, and everyday struggle to the page with a strong sense of place. Before turning fully to writing, he spent years as a schoolteacher, an experience that grounded his work in ordinary people and lived detail.
