In the dim hours of a restless night, three weather‑worn sailors hunker around a sturdy table in the lonely tavern of Uustalo. Candles flicker over a battered deck of cards, a chipped brass mug of German schnapps, and a rust‑stained seal that bears the mark of the islanders. Their voices rise over the clatter of dice as they swap stories of recent voyages, while outside the sea‑filled inlet churns with mist and hidden shoals that only the locals seem to navigate.
Beyond the tavern’s walls, the archipelago sprawls like a maze of low, stone‑studded islands, its narrow channel concealed by darkness and tangled reeds. The innkeeper, known as “Uustalon Pappa,” guards a secret signal system—flickering lights that guide trusted ships safely through the treacherous pass. When outsiders, such as greedy customs officers, attempt the same route, the lights dim and the channel becomes an impossible trap. The tension between the rugged mariners and the watchful authority sets the stage for a gritty, sea‑scented adventure.

Best known for vivid stories set around Suursaari, this Finnish writer brought island life, local folklore, and everyday struggle to the page with a strong sense of place. Before turning fully to writing, he spent years as a schoolteacher, an experience that grounded his work in ordinary people and lived detail.
