A ghostly legend drifts through the mist‑shrouded archipelago, where every wrecked vessel carries a new, ominous name. The former merchant ship Anna Marja has become the dreaded Silkkilaiva, whispered about by islanders who fear its cursed wake. Along the treacherous northern reef, a towering stone tower houses a massive fog bell whose mournful toll guides—or misleads—any sailor daring enough to approach.
The story follows Penna, the night‑watchman stationed at the bell, as he endures a relentless, fog‑filled November night. With wind howling and rain pelting his oil‑clad coat, he draws the heavy rope and strikes the bell eight times each minute, the deep resonance echoing over the black sea. The rhythm of the bell becomes a fragile lifeline, its fading tones hinting at a darkness that refuses to be contained.
Through vivid, atmospheric prose, the narrative weaves folklore, superstition, and the stark reality of life on the edge of the sea, inviting listeners to step into a world where every sound may herald salvation—or doom.

Best known for vivid stories set around Suursaari, this Finnish writer brought island life, local folklore, and everyday struggle to the page with a strong sense of place. Before turning fully to writing, he spent years as a schoolteacher, an experience that grounded his work in ordinary people and lived detail.
