A learned adventurer from the late‑eighteenth century, fueled by curiosity and a generous fortune, decides to turn the fanciful ideas of early air‑ship pioneers into a real machine. Drawing on obscure Jesuit treatises and the latest scientific gossip, he assembles a soaring vessel equipped with an ingenious air‑supply system and a mile‑measuring device on its tail. Together with his son, a pair of naturalists, and a crew of eager rowers, he prepares to test whether humanity can truly rise above the atmosphere.
As the craft lifts off, the travelers find themselves gliding higher than any balloon ever has, the world below shrinking into a patchwork of familiar continents. Their exhilaration quickly turns to caution when a mishap with the measuring instrument leaves them uncertain of their exact altitude. Yet the strange new layer of sky they encounter hints at possibilities far beyond Earth, promising a daring exploration that will challenge the limits of their knowledge and imagination.

A restless late-Enlightenment writer, lawyer, and satirist, he turned travel, politics, and social criticism into sharp, lively prose. He is best remembered today for an early utopian Mars tale that mixes imagination with reform-minded thought.
