Description

The story opens in a quiet riverside village divided by a slow‑moving stream, its houses huddled on opposite banks beneath a round church whose bell marks every birth, marriage and harvest. To one side the prosperous Spangar farm dominates the hill, while the modest Gammelgård dwellings cling to the lower shore, and the surrounding rye‑fields stretch out in a flat, golden sea. Daily life is a rhythm of fishing, logging and whispered rivalries, each season bringing its own rituals and occasional visits from roving outsiders.

At the heart of the tale are Markus, a strong‑handed farmhand, and Klara, the beautiful daughter of the widowed Gammelgård matriarch. When a sudden burst of timber work draws strangers into the valley, Markus finds himself defending Klara from danger and suspicion, sparking a fierce bond that the village watches closely. Their emerging connection sets the stage for the tensions that will shape the community’s fate, while the ever‑present river and rye fields bear silent witness to what comes next.
