About the author

Born in Vaasa in 1893, Jarl Hemmer wrote in Swedish and became one of the notable literary voices of Finland’s Swedish-speaking culture. He published poetry early in his career and went on to write novels, plays, and translations, building a reputation for language that could be both musical and intense.

His work often joins beauty with inner conflict: calm landscapes, spiritual searching, and the weight of conscience all appear in his writing. He is especially remembered for A Fool of Faith and for poetry that pairs a love of nature with a serious, sometimes troubled emotional depth.

Hemmer was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several years in a row, a sign of the regard his work earned beyond Finland. He died in Porvoo in 1944, but his books remain an important part of Finland-Swedish literary history.
