Description

René‑Alexis de La Taillade, né into a ruined noble family after the Revolution, grows up a rough‑hewn, louder‑than‑life figure whose spirit seems to mock the very titles he bears. The novel follows his reluctant entry into the army, where his love of absinthe and blunt humor earn him both camaraderie and a reputation as a “dur‑à‑cuire” among his comrades. Through witty observations on politics, rank, and the absurdities of post‑1798 France, the story paints a vivid portrait of a man torn between noble lineage and a desire for simple, idle pleasures.

When a chance encounter brings him together with the spirited Eugénie de Varangue, their unconventional courtship hints at the deeper ties of family and friendship that will shape his future. Their marriage, set against the modest backdrop of a provincial town, reveals a tenderness beneath Alexis’s blustery exterior while introducing a new cast of characters who may yet challenge his easygoing ways. The opening chapters blend satire, historical texture, and warm humanity, inviting listeners to linger over the absurdities of a world still adjusting to revolutionary change.
