About the author

Born in Versailles on June 21, 1828, Lucien Biart was a French writer whose work was closely shaped by his years in Mexico. Reference sources describe him not only as a novelist, but also as a naturalist, and his writing often reflects that blend of storytelling and close observation.

Biart became known for books that brought readers into the natural world and everyday life of Mexico and Latin America. His adventure tales for younger readers, including Adventures of a Young Naturalist and An Involuntary Voyage, helped introduce English-language audiences to his work, while other writings drew on Mexican history, customs, and landscapes.

He died in Paris in 1897. Although he is not widely read today, his books still stand out for their sense of exploration and for the way they join fiction, travel writing, and natural history.
