Description

A young merchant trades a seemingly trivial part of himself—a shadow—for the promise of limitless wealth. When the deal is sealed, his riches grow while the absence of his shadow makes him a curious and unsettling figure to everyone he meets. The loss is more than physical; it strips him of the ordinary proof that he belongs to the world, and strangers begin to treat him as a phantom.

Now adrift in a life of material comfort yet haunted by an invisible void, he embarks on a quiet search for a way to restore what he has given away. Along the way he encounters a solitary philosopher who offers a different kind of wisdom, suggesting that true wealth may lie beyond coins and commerce. Their conversations expose the fragile balance between society’s demands and the inner light that a shadow once reflected, inviting listeners to ponder what it truly means to be seen.

Adelbert von Chamisso

1781–1838

A French-born writer who made his life in Prussia, he is best remembered for the haunting tale Peter Schlemihl, about a man who sells his shadow. He was also a serious botanist, and that mix of imagination and observation gives his work a distinctive charm.
