CHAPTER I.
Peter Schlemihl is a wistful novella that follows a young, idealistic traveler who, in a moment of restless longing, trades his very shadow to a mysterious stranger in exchange for a wondrous, bottomless bag. The bargain instantly grants him an endless supply of gold, allowing him to wander the bustling streets of Europe with an unprecedented freedom. Yet, the loss of the shadow—an invisible part of his identity—quickly becomes a source of profound alienation, as strangers recoil and the world seems to turn cold toward him.
As his pockets fill, Schlemihl discovers that wealth cannot fill the void left by his missing shade. He drifts between dazzling opulence and a growing sense of emptiness, prompting introspection about what truly belongs to a person. The story unfolds as a gentle meditation on the price of ambition, the fragile ties between material comfort and inner peace, and the quiet yearning for something more than mere riches.
