A young man raised in the sacred precinct of Delphi knows only one thing about his past: he was found as a baby beside the altar of Apollo, a gift from the god himself. Though the priestess has taught him devotion and service, Ion feels a restless pull to discover the truth of his birth, and the oracle’s cryptic prophecy pushes him toward the city of Athens. There, he encounters Creusa, the queen‑to‑be, and her husband Juto, who greet him with both hospitality and an undercurrent of suspicion.
The pair have recently consulted the Delphic oracle for an heir, and the mysterious child seems to fit the divine sign, prompting Juto to claim him as his own. Unbeknownst to Ion, Creusa fears the prophecy will strip her of power and has arranged a lethal poison to silence the newcomer, entrusting the task to a loyal tutor. As the banquet approaches, Ion’s keen mind senses something amiss, setting the stage for a tense clash of hidden motives and the desperate search for identity.

One of the great tragedians of classical Athens, his plays brought myth down to a human scale, with vivid emotions, sharp arguments, and unforgettable heroines. His work still feels daring because it questions power, piety, war, and the stories people tell to justify them.
