Description

The play opens in the ruins of a once‑glorious city, where the victorious Greeks prepare to divide their spoils and the surviving women face an uncertain future. Hecuba, queen of the fallen Troy, appears amid the shattered walls, her sorrow tempered by a fierce resolve. From these opening moments, the tension between triumph and compassion draws the listener into a stark, emotionally charged landscape.

Through powerful monologues, Cassandra and Andromache reveal personal anguish that mirrors the collective trauma of their people. The chorus of captive women adds a haunting, rhythmic lament, turning their grief into a universal song of loss. Euripides balances lyrical beauty with brutal realism, letting each line convey both the heat of a burning city and the cold silence of exile. Even without knowing the story’s end, the early scenes pose enduring questions about justice, memory, and the fragile bonds that survive catastrophe.

About the author

E

Euripides

d. -406

One of the great tragedians of classical Athens, his plays brought myth down to a human scale, with vivid emotions, sharp arguments, and unforgettable heroines. His work still feels daring because it questions power, piety, war, and the stories people tell to justify them.
