Description

The story opens on a cool autumn night after a solemn service in the stone courtyard of an ancient monastery. The hegumen, a towering, kindly figure, settles on the flagstones beside a continuously flowing marble fountain, while the sky is a clear blue dotted with tiny pink‑orange clouds. Around them the rugged rocks loom like thick‑walled towers, and the scent of incense rises from the cave‑like chapel, mingling with the crisp mountain air. A child with a tray of cups wanders by, and the monks, half‑drowsy and half‑watchful, exchange quiet chatter amidst the rhythmic clatter of their sandals.

Soon the calm gives way to a sudden disturbance when the hegumen learns that the monastery’s provisions have been stolen. The monks react with a mixture of disbelief and dry humor, their conversation weaving between accusation and resignation. This early conflict hints at deeper tensions within the secluded community while preserving the serene, almost timeless atmosphere of monastic life.
