Description

Set against the bustling streets of late‑19th‑century Manila, the novel opens with a lavish evening gathering at the home of the respected but conflicted Captain Tiago. As the city's elite, clerics, and curious onlookers mingle beneath painted ceilings and river‑lit windows, the festivities reveal the stark contrasts between wealth and poverty, tradition and modernity. Through vivid descriptions of the party’s music, food, and whispered conversations, the story captures the pulse of a society on the brink of change.

Amid the laughter and clinking glasses, a young, idealistic doctor returns from abroad, bearing new ideas that challenge the entrenched power of the colonial clergy and the local aristocracy. His encounters with the charismatic but troubled families of Binondo expose hidden injustices, prejudice, and the yearning for a brighter future. The narrative weaves personal drama with broader social commentary, inviting listeners to experience the hopes, fears, and contradictions of a nation awakening.
