The story opens on a bright March morning in a modest farmstead in southern Skåne. A fourteen‑year‑old boy, lean and restless, is eager to shirk the Sunday sermon his parents demand he read, preferring sleep and mischievous schemes. As the lone candle flickers, his boredom gives way to a drowsy doze that carries him into an unexpected adventure.
While half‑asleep he is visited by a tiny, sharp‑tongued gnome who declares the boy too careless for the world. In a flash the child shrinks to the size of a sparrow and finds himself perched on the back of a flock of wild geese preparing for their great migration. With the birds as his guides, he is whisked across the Swedish countryside, discovering bustling towns, towering forests and the simple kindness of strangers that gradually reshape his restless spirit.
