Description

A lanky, fourteen‑year‑old farm boy spends his Sundays dreaming of mischief, preferring food, sleep, and hidden pranks to the solemn duties his parents set before him. When his mother and father leave for church, they leave a hefty sermon for him to read aloud at home, hoping the task will curb his wayward habits. The household, modest yet thriving with cows, geese and a modest garden, reflects the hard‑working spirit of rural Sweden, while the boy’s restless mind plots ways to avoid the responsibility. His parents’ quiet desperation to steer him toward a better disposition adds a tender urgency to the simple domestic scene.

Outside, the early spring of Skåne bursts into bloom, filling the air with larksong, fresh greenery and the promise of new life. As the boy settles into the old arm‑chair and begins to mumble the verses, the rhythmic reading oddly soothes him, hinting that even a reluctant heart might find unexpected comfort in duty. This opening sets the stage for a journey that could reshape his view of the world and his place within it.
