Description

In the frozen landscape of Lake Huron, a group of girls from Lakeview Hall gather for a spirited winter holiday. Under the watchful eye of Professor Krenner, they line up on a bright bobsled course that curls down Pendragon Hill toward the icy isle of Hope. The air crackles with excitement as Nan Sherwood, her friend Bess Harley, and the others banter about secret crushes and the approaching Christmas festivities. Their lively rivalry and camaraderie set the stage for a day of daring slides and whispered plans.

As the sleds speed across the glittering ice, tensions rise when a small group of girls, led by the mischievous Laura and Linda, seem to be plotting something beyond the race. Nan senses that the holiday cheer may mask a deeper sense of adventure, and she finds herself balancing loyalty to her friends with the urge to protect anyone who might slip away. The chapter ends with the whistle’s echo and an uneasy feeling that the carefree fun could soon turn into a rescue mission.
