Description

In the bustling streets of mid‑19th‑century Bremen, Professor Lobenstein rushes through the evening fog, desperate not to miss the departure of the steam‑ship Haidschnucke bound for New Orleans. After a hurried encounter at the Hanover House tavern, he enlists a restless house‑boy, Jahn, to guide him through the maze of warehouses and respectable townhouses toward the elusive Hessburg family, who control the ticket he needs. The dialogue crackles with regional slang and nervous urgency, painting a vivid portrait of a city alive with commerce, gossip, and the clatter of horse‑drawn carriages.

Yet the professor’s plans are tangled by miscommunication and the unpredictable rhythm of a port that never sleeps. As he negotiates extra post and considers a night ride to the harbor, the listeners sense an emerging race against time, the looming Atlantic, and the mystery of a ship whose schedule seems as fickle as the wind. The opening promises a lively blend of humor, local color, and the restless curiosity that drives a scholar toward an unknown American horizon.
