TO ALL THE LITTLE FRIENDS OF JOHNNY CHUCK AND REDDY FOX, AND TO ALL WHO LOVE THE GREEN MEADOWS AND THE SMILING POOL, THE LAUGHING BROOK AND THE MERRY LITTLE BREEZES, THIS LITTLE BOOK IS DEDICATED.
In a bright, breezy meadow where breezes play and the sun hides behind fluffy clouds, a cast of tiny animals go about their daily mischief. Danny Meadow Mouse watches the world from his doorway, troubled by the fact that his tail is much shorter than those of his cousins. While friends like Reddy Fox bark loudly and Sammy Jay plots pranks, Danny feels the sting of embarrassment whenever his tail is noticed.
One warm morning old Mr. Toad stops by, noticing Danny’s sour mood and offering a surprising clue about a family mystery. He sends Danny on a short adventure to the Smiling Pool, where the wise Grandfather Frog might explain why this particular line of mice lost half a tail, and even asks him to bring three green flies as a gift. Along the way, Danny learns that curiosity and a brave heart can turn a simple question into a journey toward belonging.
