About the author
Born in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in 1874, he grew into one of America’s most popular children’s authors. He wrote a long-running series of nature stories and became especially associated with the Old Mother West Wind books and the adventures of Peter Cottontail and his animal neighbors.
His work blended storytelling with gentle lessons about wildlife, seasons, and the outdoors, helping many young readers feel at home in the natural world. Beyond writing, he was also known as a conservationist, and that concern for protecting nature ran through much of his career.
He died in 1965, but his stories have remained in print for decades and still feel inviting for listeners who enjoy classic animal tales with a calm, affectionate spirit.
