Description

In a sprawling nineteenth‑century homestead, the Kinsolvings and their extended family gather under a roof that was meant to hold generations of children and laughter. A sudden telegram arrives, its terse words stirring panic among the matriarchs—Grandmother Capers and Grandmother Kinsolving—while Aunt Ruth’s fierce resolve clashes with the more conciliatory voices in the room. Meanwhile, the fragile young Melville, a bedridden cousin, adds his own volatile mix of fear and resentment, turning the domestic scene into a tinderbox of raw emotion.

As the relatives argue over who may stay, who must leave, and how many children the house can truly accommodate, the novel captures the fragile balance between duty, affection, and the weight of family expectations. The dialogue crackles with humor and bitterness, hinting at deeper secrets that the telegram may unleash. Listeners are drawn into a portrait of a household on the brink, where every whispered objection could reshape the lives within those venerable walls.
