Description

Fresh off a long, lonely train ride, Dorothy Calvert steps off the platform in a bustling Toronto station, clutching her bag and a nervous hope. The crowded city seems indifferent, and a cascade of tears threatens to drown her confidence as she searches for the person who was supposed to meet her at the Oak Knowe School for Girls. Just as panic rises, a kindly, bearded ox‑cart driver named John Gilpin appears, offering a rough‑handed but sincere promise to escort her to the school. His gentle humor and straightforward manner begin to pull Dorothy out of her fear, hinting at the unexpected friendships that await.

The story follows Dorothy as she navigates the unfamiliar customs of a Canadian town and the expectations of a prestigious girls’ school. Through lively encounters with locals, mischievous classmates, and the school’s eccentric staff, she learns to balance independence with trust. Raymond’s gentle humor and realistic observations make the early journey feel both adventurous and warmly familiar.
