A weary commuter on a rattling streetcar notices a speck of movement on the window sill—a figure no larger than a dust mote, dressed in white and crowned with tiny knobs. Fascinated, he scoops the minute stranger into a matchbox, heart thundering at the thought of possessing something extraordinary. The ordinary world blurs around him as he rushes home, eager to examine this microscopic marvel in the privacy of his basement.
Back in his room, he fashions magnifying lenses and tweezers, treating the little man like a prized specimen. While he plans how to share the discovery, a lingering whisper hints that the tiny being may have stumbled from a realm governed by merciless deities. The narrator’s excitement turns to unease, suggesting that probing this hidden world could invite forces far beyond his comprehension.
