by Forrest J. Ackerman
Born in Los Angeles in 1916, Forrest J. Ackerman became one of the most recognizable champions of science fiction fandom. Often called "Forry," he worked as a writer, editor, literary agent, and collector, and was widely associated with the early growth of organized fan culture.
He is especially remembered for editing Famous Monsters of Filmland, the magazine that introduced generations of readers to classic horror and fantasy cinema. Beyond publishing, he was known for his vast collection of books and movie memorabilia, his enthusiasm for science fiction and monster films, and his support for Esperanto.
Ackerman died in 2008, but his influence still shows up anywhere fans celebrate genre history with joy, curiosity, and a sense of community.
