Born in the quiet town of Caprese and raised in the stone‑carving village of Settignano, the future master seemed destined for art from his first breath. As a child he clutched bits of marble and a chisel, turning them into toys, while his father’s connections with the Medici opened doors to a formal apprenticeship under Domenico Ghirlandaio. Those early years immersed him in the vibrant world of Florentine painting and sculpture, shaping a fierce dedication to both craft and imagination.
By his early twenties Michelangelo had already attracted the attention of Lorenzo de’ Medici, who sponsored his study of ancient statuary and encouraged his bold experiments. A celebrated rivalry with Leonardo da Vinci pushed him to enter the famed competition for the Baptistry doors, a moment that marked his emergence as a serious sculptor. Invited to Rome by Pope Julius II, he began the monumental task of painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, a project that would define his legacy.
