CHAPTER VII.
Stepping from the cramped decks of an early 19th‑century ship onto the rugged shores of New South Wales, a young Anglican clergyman quickly found himself at the heart of a fledgling penal settlement. In his own words he describes the harsh moral climate, the desperate need for order, and the stark contrast between the convicts' suffering and the untouched landscape. His account offers a vivid, first‑hand portrait of a colony grappling with law, faith, and survival.
Soon the same minister turned his attention beyond the Australian coast, becoming a driving force behind the London Missionary Society’s outreach to New Zealand and Tahiti. The memoirs trace his procurement of a sturdy brig, his early voyages among island communities, and the complex negotiations with both European traders and indigenous chiefs. Through letters and journal entries the narrative reveals his earnest belief in civilizing missions, while also hinting at the controversies that would later surround his methods.

An English-born cleric, farmer, and magistrate, he became one of the most influential—and most debated—figures in early Australia and New Zealand. Best known for helping establish the first Anglican mission in New Zealand, he also left behind a far more complicated legacy in colonial New South Wales.
