Lawrence Varick has always prided himself on a rational, well‑ordered life—steady work, comfortable habits, and a skeptical eye toward anything unproven. One ordinary noon, his bedroom in an Adirondack club‑house dissolves into the sun‑baked streets of a tiny, unfamiliar village, its red‑tiled roofs glowing and its market square buzzing with a language none of his European fluencies can decode. The sudden, uncanny shift fills him with a cold, unfamiliar dread that pierces his usual composure.
At the edge of the crowd a young woman in a coquettish hat catches his eye; her dark lashes, deep brown eyes, and confident English spoken with a faint accent offer a lifeline in the bewildering scene. Their brief exchange, clumsy on his part yet tinged with unexpected chemistry, hints that she may hold the key to understanding where—and why—he has been dropped. As Varick steadies his nerves, the listener is pulled into a mystery that promises cultural intrigue, subtle romance, and a quest for the reality behind the sudden transport.
