Description

In a crisp December evening, Devondale, Ohio, transforms from quiet streets into a bustling parade of carriages and automobiles heading for St. Giles’ Episcopal Church. The town gathers for Barbara Devon’s wedding, drawing bank presidents, local caddies, and every curious neighbor eager to witness the ceremony and exchange whispered gossip. Amid the polished ceremony, the narrator notes a lingering restlessness that underlies the town’s respectable façade.

The narrative follows Laurie, a thoughtful young woman whose life feels constrained by family expectations and the mysterious presence of an old mirror in the Devon house. Chance meetings with the charismatic Jimmy and quiet observations of the wedding crowd stir her curiosity, hinting that the reflective glass may conceal more than a simple image. Listeners are drawn into a first act that balances small‑town charm with an emerging sense of personal discovery, suggesting that ordinary lives can reflect extraordinary possibilities.
