Description

In the spring of 1813 a sweeping wave of patriotic enthusiasm sweeps across the German lands, spurred by the defeat of Napoleon’s forces and the rallying call of the Prussian king. Against this backdrop a youthful wanderer, clad in a dark sammet coat and bearing a simple staff, roams the quiet forests of Saxony, listening to the cheerful song of a lone lark that seems to herald a new era for his nation. His brief encounter with the open road quickly leads him toward a small yet determined band gathered around Major von Lützow, a unit whose daring raids have already earned a fierce reputation among the people.

The narrative follows the early days of this “wild hunt,” highlighting the camaraderie of notable comrades such as the poet‑soldier Körner and the gymnastics pioneer Jahn. Their exploits—swift skirmishes, daring night rides, and the relentless drive to stir the hearts of both youth and elders—paint a vivid picture of a people eager to reclaim freedom. The story captures the hopeful spirit of a nation on the brink of change, inviting listeners to feel the rustle of leaves, the echo of marching feet, and the fervent promise of a new dawn.
