Description

In a languid July afternoon, London’s bustling streets seem oddly hushed, setting the stage for a gathering of colorful personalities in a fashionable club. Jimmy Dalrymple, a restless gambler tangled in a risky horse‑bet, trades barbed banter with his friend Lord Helmdon—known as “Chubby”—while a pair of street dogs fight beneath their window. Their conversation drifts from mounting debts to a promised tea at Brook Street, hinting at the precarious balances of wealth, reputation, and chance that will shape their lives.

The duo soon joins the elegant Mrs Seaton and her brother Paul Ponsonby, a handsome but reluctant heir to an earldom, as they head toward a soirée. There, a melancholy young girl named Philippa confides in Ponsonby about her lingering loneliness amid society’s chatter. Through witty repartee and gentle observation, the opening paints a portrait of a glittering yet uneasy world, where fortunes rise and fall as swiftly as a horse’s hooves on the track.
