In the remote parish of Lövsjö, the year 1800 begins with a violent All Saints’ Day gale that tears roofs from houses and flattens farms. The wind is spoken of as a divine punishment, a force so relentless that the villagers recount every shattered beam and buried animal as if the storm will never end.

Among the chaos is a thin‑framed girl known locally as the “pikkupiika”, barely fourteen, who steps out of the forest edge to watch the tempest sweep the valley. With her mother and younger brother bundled in the same rough lamb‑skin garments, she feels the gale clutch her coat and threaten to knock her to the ground. Despite the cold and the howling, they press toward the distant church, hoping to reach the Christmas service before the storm forces them back.
