Description

A modest crew sets out from New England aboard the schooner‑yacht Curlew, eager to test their skill and curiosity on the bitter seas of the North Atlantic. Early on they chase cod on the Grand Bank, wrestle with sudden fog, and confront the first icy drifts that hint at the harsher world ahead. The captain, a seasoned mariner, keeps the ship steady while the narrator, Wash, records the quirks of the vessel and its eclectic passengers, from the diligent guard to the adventurous Gloucester boys.

Soon the Curlew pierces the fog‑laden waters of Hudson Strait, where towering icebergs loom and strange sounds echo across the frozen horizon. Encounters with curious wildlife—whales, a dead narwhal, and a pair of bears—push the crew into daring hunts using a howitzer and a massive rifle. Their journey soon brings them to remote, desolate islands, where indigenous hunters in kayaks appear, their language incomprehensible but their presence unmistakable, adding an unsettled tension to the expedition.

The narrative balances vivid descriptions of Arctic landscapes with the practical challenges of navigation, supply, and morale. As the crew grapples with sudden storms, unexpected explosions, and the ever‑present threat of the ice, the story captures both the rugged awe of the polar frontier and the human drama of a small group thrust into an unforgiving world.
