Description

A windswept farm on the banks of the Rhône opens the drama, its stone walls and towering grain loft hinting at a life rooted in season and duty. Shepherd Balthazar rests beside an old well while the innkeeper Francet Mamaï and his spirited daughter Rose move through the courtyard, their voices mingling with the clatter of tools and the distant hum of village gossip. The stage is alive with the simple, stubborn rhythm of rural Provence, where every door and key seems to hold a story waiting to unfold.

Into this setting Frederi, a restless youth, is consumed by an impossible love for the unseen “Arlésienne,” a woman who haunts his thoughts and fuels his feverish desire for marriage. Francet, eager to secure a bride for his son, debates the merits of a practical country girl against the allure of a city‑born match, while Balthazar offers a gruff, seasoned perspective on tradition versus youthful impulse. Their banter reveals a clash of generations and expectations, setting the stage for a love that may prove as tangled as the vines clinging to the farm’s stone walls.
