Description

In the quiet reaches of Normandy a once‑glorious château dominates a tangled park, its crumbling walls and overgrown avenues echoing the weight of generations. Madame Carmin, a stern widow cloaked in black habit and relentless thrift, oversees the estate with iron resolve, dispensing favors to her tenants only when she sees fit. The rooms are a patchwork of faded elegance—crystal chandeliers, silk drapes, and a hearth that paints the winter evenings in amber light.

Amid this ordered world moves Laurent, a twelve‑year‑old boy whose bright eyes and curious spirit seem at odds with the rigid expectations of his lineage. He watches his mother’s austere rituals and the steady flow of farmers seeking repairs, feeling both admiration and a yearning for something beyond the prescribed duties of a future landowner. His voice, still ringing like a choir boy’s, hints at a hidden sensitivity.

When Laurent slips through a half‑closed door, he catches a glimpse of a figure that does not belong to the familiar landscape—a fleeting presence that stirs the still air of the park and promises a mystery that will test the family’s tightly held secrets.

A daring voice in French letters, this poet and novelist moved easily between verse, fiction, journalism, and art. Her work often blends sensuality, travel, and a sharp sense of independence.
