Description

Set on a sun‑baked farm by the Rhône, the play opens in a courtyard that teems with stone steps, a towering granary and a well framed by wild vines. The everyday rhythms of rural life are felt in the clatter of a wheelbarrow and the hush of a shepherd’s pipe, while a colorful cast—Baltasar the shepherd, the earnest Inocente, the pragmatic Francisco Samay, and the headstrong Rosa—move through the space with familiar ease.

Amid the routine, the conversation turns to a younger generation’s restless heart. Federico, barely twenty, has fallen under a feverish spell for an “arlesiana,” a mysterious woman who haunts his thoughts and threatens to upend the plans his elders have laid. Baltasar and Francisco argue over tradition versus desire, questioning whether a farmwife or a city romance better suits the boy’s future. Their witty banter reveals the tensions of authority, love, and the pull of modern dreams, setting the stage for a drama that balances humor with genuine concern for the next generation.
