Sippo Kelles lives a modest life on the back road of Haapaniemi, tending his modest farm with wife Maija‑Liisa and their handful of children. Though he once attended the village school, his world has narrowed to the rhythms of farming, church, and the occasional steam‑ship that drifts past the riverbank. His memories of youthful excursions—seeing a two‑wheeled carriage without a seat, watching a merchant push a cart on his own—have faded into hazy dreams of a larger world he no longer longs to join.
When the local court needs a clerk, Sippo steps in as a “käräjäsankari,” delivering papers, noting signatures, and shuffling through the bustle of jurors and judges. The courtroom becomes his window to a wider humanity: gossip, disputes, and the occasional generous day‑pay that brightens his evenings. Amid the crackle of coffee cups and the rustle of legal documents, Sippo finds a surprising charm in the very place that once seemed foreign, discovering that even a small rural life can be woven with ordinary adventures and quiet humor.
