About the author

Born in Nurmes on April 27, 1855, Juho Heikki Reijonen was a Finnish writer and Lutheran clergyman. He studied at university in the 1870s, was ordained in 1881, and later served as a pastor in southeastern Finland, including Vederlax and Valkjärvi.

Alongside his church work, he became known for short stories and novels that drew on village life, popular beliefs, and the speech and habits of common people. His fiction belongs to the period when Finnish prose was widening its focus beyond educated circles and paying closer attention to the lives of rural communities and children.

Reijonen died in Valkjärvi on April 10, 1924. Several of his works have remained accessible through digital library projects, and he is still remembered as a writer who preserved scenes of everyday Finnish life with sympathy and detail.
