Description

In a crisp autumn day, the Carey family gathers in their modest home, preparing for their matriarch’s sudden departure to a distant military fort. As the children—curious, restless, and full of secret hopes—watch their mother’s anxious preparations, they are thrust into a flurry of letters, promises, and whispered concerns about health, duty, and the unknown stretch of weeks ahead. The scene crackles with the tension of a household caught between comfort and the unsettling prospect of change, while the youngest, Peter, clings to his mother’s gentle reassurances.

Amid the clatter of suitcases and the soft murmur of family members urging one another forward, the narrative gently unfolds the intricate bonds that hold them together. The children’s personalities emerge—Nancy’s fierce protectiveness, Gilbert’s dutiful record‑keeping, and Kathleen’s quiet steadiness—painting a vivid portrait of a family navigating love, responsibility, and the looming uncertainty of an extended absence. The first act sets the tone for a heartfelt exploration of resilience and the small, tender moments that sustain them.
