Description

The story opens on a crisp October day as Mother Carey prepares to depart for a long journey, leaving her bustling household in the hands of her children. With her husband gravely ill and a telegram warning of typhoid, the family must navigate an uneasy mix of anxiety and responsibility while promising to keep her updated through letters and telegrams. The children—Nancy, Gilbert, Kathleen, and the mischievous little Peter—each respond to their mother’s departure in their own way, revealing the close bonds and underlying tensions that shape their lives.

As the Careys settle into the rhythm of daily chores, school, and the inevitable worries of a household without its matriarch, the narrative captures the warmth of sibling loyalty and the challenges of growing up quickly. Through gentle humor and heartfelt moments, the first act sets the stage for a tender exploration of family duty, love, and the small miracles that keep a home together.
