Description

A lone traveler steps off a tram and into the dimly lit foyer of the “Three Helmets” inn, where a rotund porter in a festive uniform barely registers her presence. She is a tired, sleepless woman, clutching a suitcase and a hat adorned with dark ribbons, looking for a quiet room for a week's stay. The hall is strewn with scattered objects, cold and shadowy, yet streaks of light from a distant window reveal fresh flowers and green leaves lining the stairs.

Soon she learns that the inn is buzzing with preparations for a lavish wedding between the richest merchant’s daughter and the son of a high‑ranking judge. The bustling staff, the clinking of champagne bottles, and the arrival of well‑dressed guests hint at a world of privilege that clashes with her solitary, uneasy demeanor. As she watches the ceremony’s early arrangements unfold, the story gently probes themes of social hierarchy, restless longing, and the quiet mysteries that linger behind grand celebrations.
