Born in a modest Bohemian village, Jan Hus grew up amid poverty yet displayed an early hunger for learning that carried him to the University of Prague. There he worked the streets for food, earned a string of degrees, and rose rapidly to become rector and a popular preacher at the Bethlehem chapel, where his clear, heartfelt sermons attracted nobles and common folk alike. His reputation for honesty and humility earned him the confidence of Queen Sophia, who made him her confessor and court chaplain.
Hus’s theological outlook was profoundly shaped by the writings of John Wycliffe, which he encountered through fellow scholars traveling between Bohemia and England. Inspired by Wycliffe’s call for a return to Scripture, Hus began to denounce the wealth and moral laxity he saw among the clergy, insisting that sin held clergy to a higher standard than laypeople. His outspoken criticism sparked fierce debate within the university and drew the ire of church authorities, setting the stage for a conflict that would reverberate across Europe.
