Description

In the waning light of a Shetland summer, Lerwick’s quiet streets hum with the soft chatter of women gathering at the public fountain. Against a backdrop of rugged stone houses and the endless sea, Jan Vedder is set to wed Margaret Fae, the daughter of the town’s most prosperous merchant. The townsfolk exchange wary whispers about Jan’s restless spirit and obstinate nature, casting a shadow over the festive mood.

As the wedding approaches, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a close‑knit fishing community where tradition and superstition walk hand in hand. Margaret’s bright hope clashes with the lingering doubts about her husband’s character, hinting at trials that may test both love and livelihood. Early hints of Jan’s ambition and the unforgiving northern waters suggest that their new life together will soon be shaped by forces far beyond the quiet lanes of Lerwick.
