Description

On Southampton’s bustling docks, a seasoned merchant and his bright‑eyed son board the grand steamer L’Orient for a voyage that will test their courage. The elder Maximilian Gordon watches his son—known as “Madcap Max”—prepare to leave familiar English shores for distant, uncharted lands.

The ship’s course heads toward a remote island dominated by a smoking volcano, a place whispered among sailors as both a treasure and a trap. When a sudden crisis erupts, Max’s quick thinking thrusts him into a clash with a hostile force far larger than he appears. As the volcano rumbles, the boy must rely on his wits, courage, and the bond with his father to survive the first deadly encounter.

Through vivid scenes of steam‑powered adventure and looming natural fury, the story captures a young hero standing against overwhelming odds, offering listeners an exciting blend of danger and determination.

Frank Sheridan

Best known today as a pen name of John de Morgan, this adventure writer turned out fast-moving stories for young readers, full of shipwrecks, frontier danger, and Revolutionary-era heroics. His books have the punchy, serialized energy of popular fiction from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
