Description

The Blue Pike is a lively riverside inn at Miltenberg, a crossroads where travelers from Nuremberg, Augsburg and beyond pause before boarding the ferry to Frankfurt and the Lower Rhine. Inside, a chaotic crowd of merchants, clergy, soldiers and vagabonds swap stories, gamble, and barter while the summer sun fades over the bustling tavern. The atmosphere crackles with anticipation as news spreads that Emperor Maximilian will soon convene the Reichstag in Cologne, drawing princes, knights and common folk alike to the inn.

Amid the clamor, a ragged troupe led by the blasphemous Cyriaq and his red‑haired wife Gitta scramble to hide a secret—two dice concealed in a loaf of bread that could seal their fate with the Nuremberg magistrates. Their companions—a lame crutch‑bound man, a frail girl named Kuni, and a hulking chain‑bearer—work feverishly to keep the fugitives from detection. Just as they think they have bought a moment’s safety, a flamboyant company of Nuremberg mercenaries arrives, their glittering armor flashing in the dusk, promising a new wave of danger and intrigue.
