Description

An impeccably illustrated catalog, this work gathers the tiny “oselle” medals struck for each Doge of Venice, tracing their evolution from the early Republic to its final days. The second edition, issued in 1847, presents corrected inscriptions, refined typography and numerous additions that bring the flat metal portraits to vivid life. Each plate is accompanied by concise notes that identify the ruler, the year of issue and the historic event commemorated on the reverse.

Beyond the images, the author weaves a brief but lively essay on why these miniature coins matter more than crumbling columns or weathered stone. He argues that the medals preserve fleeting moments of civic pride, diplomatic triumphs and civic ceremonies in a format that survives the ravages of time. The opening dedication and personal preface reveal a genuine affection for Venetian heritage, inviting listeners to explore history through the tiny lenses of metal.
