The drama opens with a house steeped in grief and secret schemes. Clytemnestra, haunted by nightmares, dispatches her daughter Electra with a chorus of women, hoping their mournful dances will appease the restless spirit of her slain husband. In the shadow of the tomb, Electra and her brother Orestes, long hidden away, recognize each other and vow to avenge their father’s murder.
Bound by a divine command, Orestus returns in disguise, plotting to strike first at the usurper Aegisthus and then at the treacherous queen. As the siblings prepare their retributive rite, the audience feels the weight of familial duty clashing with the looming threat of doom. The early tension sets the stage for a clash of justice, fate, and the haunting presence of the gods, drawing listeners into a world where loyalty and vengeance are inseparable.

Often called the father of tragedy, this pioneering playwright helped shape what drama could be. His surviving works still feel grand and intense, full of justice, fate, war, and the uneasy relationship between humans and the gods.
