Description

Hiram Strong stands on a ridge, breathing the clean, thaw‑laden air of early February and feeling the pull of the fields below. After two restless years in the cramped brick town of Crawberry—where a string of jobs and a demanding shopkeeper have left him dissatisfied—he longs for the open, green checkerboard of farmland that once shaped his childhood. The scent of fresh earth and the promise of spring awaken a stubborn pride in the seventeen‑year‑old, reminding him that his strong, calloused hands were built for plowing, not for counting change. As he gazes past the smoky chimneys and factory silhouettes, Hiram begins to wonder whether the city’s hustle is truly his destiny.

His thoughts turn to the old family farm, abandoned after his father’s death, and to the modest tools left behind that whisper of a life he could reclaim. A chance encounter with a lost card and a whispered bargain hint that opportunity may be closer than he imagined, urging him to confront the expectations of the town’s merchants. With a mixture of determination and uncertainty, Hiram feels the first stirrings of a plan that could restore his roots and set him on a new path. The season’s first crocuses may soon be matched by his own burgeoning resolve to trade city streets for furrowed fields.
